World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22.
Fresh Water Day was proposed at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Its purpose is to draw attention to the importance of drinking water and the protection of water resources.
Every year, the celebration of International Water Day is related to a certain aspect of fresh water.
On March 22, governments and international organizations reaffirm that clean water is life and our lives depend on how we protect water quality. The aim is to raise public awareness and culture to accelerate the achievement of one of the development goals for this century – halving the number of people without access to clean water and sanitation by 2015. The initiative to celebrate World Water Day was born in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations General Assembly designated March 22 as World Water Day. The day has been officially celebrated since 1993, with annual events organized around the world dedicated to water.
